One of the most annoying things about spammers, hackers, and general Internet scum

Posted February 7, 2018 For Everyone, Interesting Stuff, Security Tagged account spamming, hackers, hacking, holidays, spammers, spamming, super bowl

One of the most annoying things about spammers, hackers, and general Internet scum is…

They use holidays and days of special events against the people they are attacking.

It makes sense in a dastardly way. The best time to attack an online property is when surveillance and repair capabilities are at their lowest. One of those times would be holidays – particularly if the attack is something that a human being probably is needed to prevent or reduce.

We see account spam additions on email lists – subscription email lists through paid vendors – all the time. Same with free web account creation on sites that allow it. When did we see a big hit last?

Super Bowl Sunday. They know when the eyes are distracted. Software and code can only do so much, you need a decision maker available at times on what isn’t covered, or falls barely within the allowable. Spammers and hackers look for the obvious times when the decision makers are less available.

You might want to remember that when you contact I.T. support the day after a holiday or big event. Chances are, they had more than a skeleton crew working at some point the previous day. They might be forgiven for being a little annoyed because of it.
