A Brief Post About Vacations and Vacation Homes

Media in the old vacation rental homeAnd now, a brief post about vacations.

We like a good vacation as much as anyone, and for the last 12 years we’ve been renting houses at VRBO or other such sites once we have decided on a location. Since one member of our family is in the Internet industry, Internet connectivity has always been a necessity. There’s been an evolution – 12 years ago I’d even accept taking the laptop and using dialup, but since then there is a need for high speed connectivity for my laptop, or even better, if they had a computer so I didn’t have to bring one on the trip (especially preferable when flying).

But there’s a new vacation standard now. You better have wifi, or have something particularly unique about your vacation house, or I’m going to look elsewhere.

Why? Because I don’t want to bring a laptop, and I don’t need to bring a laptop when I have a tablet. But I need wifi to access the Internet with it. And so does my wife if she wants to use her tablet.  And so do other members of the family.  And we all want to use it perhaps at the same time.  So… we want wireless.

I just did a search on La Paz, Baja California on VRBO. (Random selection, not planning on going there at this point) There are 86 properties listed, 69 of them have Internet or WiFi. VRBO lets me search that out, amongst all sorts of other variables.  I wish they would specify in the search WiFi specifically.  I think this is going to be a requirement as a search capability.  And if you own a vacation rental property – you better consider wifi as standard as offering air conditioning in the tropics.  It’s just the way things are going to be.
